When we look at people who became bald, we really have a dreadful feeling thinking if that would happen to us. It is more than just fate though – its genetics that dictates what will happen to our hair when we get older. When hair loss becomes an issue, some people may turn to find an immediate resolution to the problem such as a hair transplant.

A young person who has not lost any hair yet has about 90 grafts for each square centimeter of skin. When the hair transplant surgeon makes the tiny little slits in the skin to place the new grafts, only about 30-35 slits can be made in a square centimeter without injuring the tissue and jeopardizing graft growth. Therefore when we complete a hair transplant, we do not restore the scalp to 90 grafts per centimeter, rather we restore to 1/3 normal density in the case of absolute baldness up to 2/3 normal density in the case of a patient with some existing hair.

This does not result in a full head of hair, but it gives the patient an appearance of fullness and density that should meet or exceed their expectations. Most men do not notice that their hair is thin until about half of it is gone, therefore by approaching or exceeding 50% normal density with the new grafts, the hair transplant surgeon can make the patients hair look full.

Using the latest equipment combined with an experienced hair surgeon, the bandage should never be required. Many today have a hair transplant done in the morning, and are back to work by afternoon.

With a sharp blade, individual strands of hair, or small bunches of hair are separated to prepare follicular units hair grafts. The recipient area is then anesthetized and tiny incisions in natural (irregular) patterns are made, into which the follicular unit grafts are placed. The procedure is usually completed over a few sessions. The tiny incisions close up on their own and heal quickly. A person will usually have some redness and scabs in the recipient area, which disappear within about one week.
